Term 1 - Weeks 9 & 10
Good afternoon parents and welcome to Weeks 9 & 10
We have had some pirate fun this week and Mr Lee has said that 2N can dress up as pirates on Friday this week! It is hard to believe we are entering the last two weeks of school. Library is back on Wednesdays. Sorry for any confusion.
Homework
On Monday, we will be sending home the Year Two
fluency grid with this fortnight’s focus sounds and tricky words. Have a look
at our blog post titled 'Week 4 Information' which shows you how you can use
this at home to increase your child's reading fluency. We have also included
all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid.
The pink list 💓
is the target for Year Two from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use
these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Below are the
Year 2 Fluency grids and spelling lists.
Learning Intentions
English:
This fortnight, we are learning the spelling sound
'tch' as in ‘match’ and the prefix 'un' as in 'unfair'. The tricky words for
this fortnight are - people, laugh, every, know.
Please have a look at the rule for using 'tch' below, it is like the ‘ck’ or ‘k’ rule:
‘tch’ or ‘ch’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW7_tssT1XU
‘ck’ or ‘k’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTmXI3cjCUA
We will continue to focus on the text genre of imaginative
narrative writing (fiction story writing) and last week began our mentor text
titled ‘Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map’. Over the next fortnight, we will be
exploring narrative structure using ‘Story Mountain’. You can help your
child to better understand story structure by using the below ‘Write Your Own
Story Adventure Story’. You may wish to identify some elements when reading
fiction text with your child. An excellent YouTube explanation of narrative
writing is below:

We will be concluding our unit of skip counting
this week. Children will need to skip count forward and backwards from any
starting point. They will also need to identify a pattern of numbers, e.g.:
·
5, 7, 9 - counting by 2s.
·
3, 6, 9 - counting by 3s.
By the end of Year Two, the children are expected
to skip count in 2's, 3s, 5's and 10's from any given number.

·
Describe a pattern created by skip
counting and representing the pattern on a number line.
·
Investigate features of number patterns
resulting from adding twos, fives, or tens.
On Monday, children came into class and discovered
a pirate treasure chest. After recess we found a key to unlock the chest.
Inside was a treasure map, so with great excitement, we set off to find the
treasure only to discover that it was not the real treasure but itchy seed pods
from a tree at school! The children were very disappointed. Luckily there was
another treasure map inside the box, and we set off again to follow the red
line. We looked in all the places the map suggested we follow and kept an eye
out to ensure it wasn’t hidden along the way. We looked in the basketball court
bin, the chook pen bin and the recess area bins as well. No treasure was to be
found, so we went back to the classroom. To our surprise the treasure box now
contained Chupa Chups! The class discussed how the Chupa Chups could have been
placed in the treasure chest. Two theories emerged:
1.
Mrs Lynn put them in the treasure box
very quickly.
2.
Yr 6 buddies were playing a trick on us
in revenge for spying on them a couple of weeks ago. The class decided that this
theory was the most likely. 😊
