Term 2 Weeks 9 & 10 Blog

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the year!

2N Prayer Assembly this Friday!

2N’s prayer assembly will be on Friday 23rd June at 2.15pm. We hope you can make it. The class will be wearing their school uniform as it is not a performance assembly, so no arguments at home about they want to wear! Each child will have a chance to speak. If you already know your child will not be at school on that date, please let me know.

Innovating in 2N

We made our own stylus last week. We wanted to draw pictures of 3D shapes on the iPad so we used everyday materials to make our own stylus! Ask your child how they made the stylus using a pen casing, a damp cotton tip and alfoil.

Homework

Below are our Fluency grids, spelling lists and focus sounds for weeks 9 and 10.

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are learning the suffix 'ing' and how when we add 'ing' to the end of a base word we can change its meaning and create a new word.

This fortnight we are reviewing some of the tricky words we have learnt over the semester that upon testing have found the children need more practise with. The tricky words for this fortnight are - they, work, thought, because, their, were, who, people, something, what, different, where.

Last week, we completed our published copy of an imaginary hybrid animal. We had some very interesting animal combinations. Please come in and read your child’s informational text of their imaginary animal.

IntiaLit:

We have also continued to learn the difference between an imaginative text, informative text and a persuasive text (Check out Term 2 - Week 7 blog for the InitiaLit posters on these 3 different text types)

We have now started to learn all about prediction and how predicting is making a smart guess about what we think will happen in a text. This helps us to understand what we are reading and make us want to read more. We learnt that to be able to successfully predict, we need to ask ourselves two questions:

What has happened so far?

What will happen next?

Maths

Last week, we began learning about the concept of Chance and how we can describe everyday events by using words like: certain, likely, equal chance, unlikely and impossible. We will continue to explore this for Week 9 and will then revise all the math concepts we have learnt in Semester One.

  • Identify practical activities and everyday events that involve chance. Describe outcomes as ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ and identify some events as ‘certain’ or ‘impossible’ (ACMSP047)

Extended Holidays

If you are planning on escaping early, please visit the lovely Fran in the office to fill out an extended leave form. This would be greatly appreciated.

Semester One Reports

Formal reports will be sent home in electronic form via SEQTA on the final day of term.

The grading of our Semester One reports align with the Western Australian curriculum and achievement standards for Year 2. We encourage you to read the first page of the report which explains what each grade letter means in association with the SCSA WA curriculum. If your child receives a 'C' grade, this is the expected level of achievement.

I am very proud of how hard everyone has worked this year. If you would like to contact me to discuss your child’s report, please email me to make a time either this term or early next term.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all the Year Two students who participated in the OLC Cross Country race last week. It was great to see such a positive attitude displayed by everyone. Well done Year 2!
