Term 3, Weeks 3 & 4

 Dear parents,

I hope you all had a chance to relax this weekend. This week’s blog contains a lot of information about the next two weeks.

2N Assembly

2N assembly item will be performed on Friday, 18 of August (week 5). If you know your child will be absent on this date, please let me know as soon as possible so I can reallocate parts. The children will wear their sports uniform to school and change into weekend clothes during lunch. I have organised pig beanie hats and wolf hats, so no costumes, as such, are required. Your child can add an extra touch, such as a bow tie, large glasses to add to their character or narrator role. Every child will have a speaking part as either a character in the story or as a narrator. Last week your part was sent home in their reading to practice their part so they will be confident and enjoy themselves on the day.

Mission Markets

On Friday 4th of August (this week) we are celebrating the 27th anniversary of OLC and the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. This year, the markets will be focused on raising money for the Catholic Mission Australia with the profits of the day going to charities in Thailand. We would love the children to bring money that they have earned from doing jobs around the house so that they can understand the value of the money they are donating.

The Year 2N children are running a making craft stall, and we would greatly appreciate if you could donate craft items, paper or recycled materials.

On Friday, students need to bring a maximum of $20 in coins to spend at the various stalls. Please make sure that they have either a wallet or purse with their name on it. A ziploc bag clearly labelled is also a good option.

Homework

Below are our Fluency grids, spelling lists and focus sounds for weeks 1 and 2.

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are reviewing the 'ow' as in cow, 'ou' as in house, 'oy' as in boy and 'oi' as in coin.   We have learnt that ‘ou’ and ‘oi’ go in the middle of the word and ‘ow’ and ‘oy’ usually go at the end of a word.

This fortnight’s tricky words are - build, tomorrow, school and cousin.

In week 1, we have begun to explore persuasive text by looking at the story, The True Story Of The 3 Little Pigs. We have learnt that the purpose of a persuasive text is to convince the reader of an opinion. We will continue our mentor text 'Summer is the Best Season of the year’.

 IntiaLit:

We have learnt that there are three types of connections we can make:

Text-to-self connections occur when the text reminds the reader of a personal experience.

Text-to-text connections occur when the text reminds the reader of a previously read text.

Text-to-world connections occur when the text reminds the read of past or current world events and information gained from their everyday life.

We have now started to learn about visualising. We have learnt that we use two parts of our brain when reading - one part helps us read the words on the page and the other part of our brain should be making a movie in our mind. This will help us to understand and answer questions about the text.

 Maths

We have been learning about Multiplication and how a multiplication sum can be represented by groups, an array, repeated addition, skip counting and by using a symbol to mean multiplication. The following YouTube clip that may be of interest to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uacFH2oLj9M

Operation Christmas Child

Last week, your child brought home a note that outlined what kind of items can be sent away in the shoebox. We are asking for all donations with the $2.50 to be brought to school by Friday 18th Augusut (Week 5) please.

Have a look at the blog post titled ‘Shoe Box Gift’ if you would like any information regarding what your child has been allocated to bring in.

Friendology

This semester, we will refresh what we have learnt in Semester One about how to be a good friend, how to maintain a healthy friendship and how to deal with tricky situations that may happen in the playground.

We would love to share some of this information with you. URSTRONG’s whole-school friendship strategy has improved the social climate in schools around the world, connecting over a million kids, parents, and teachers with a common language of friendship. We are proud to be a URSTRONG School and are committed to empowering your children with friendship skills.

You are invited to take advantage of a FREE Parent Membership to access hundreds of resources – including an 8 session video series. This will allow you to learn the same language & strategies being taught in the classroom through the Friendology 101 curriculum.
