Term 3, Weeks 5 & 6
Dear Parents
I hope everyone had a
chance to relax this weekend in the beautiful sunshine.
2N Assembly
2N assembly item will be performed this week on Friday! They
have been amazing during practise and I can’t wait for you to see their
performance. The children will wear their sports uniform to school and change
into weekend clothes (if they wish to) during lunch. I have organised pig
beanie hats and wolf hats, so no costumes, as such, are required. Your child
can add an extra touch, such as a bow tie, large glasses to add to their
character or narrator role.
Mass
Weather permitting, Year 2 will walk to Mass on Wednesday
morning. We will be back at school in time for recess.
Operation Christmas Child
Last week, your child
brought home a note that outlined what kind of items can be sent away in the
shoebox. We are asking for all donations with the $2.50 to be
brought to school by Friday 18th Augusut
(this week) please.
Have a look at the blog post titled ‘Shoe
Box Gift’ if you would like any information regarding what your child has been
allocated to bring in.
Homework
Below are our Fluency grids, spelling lists and
focus sounds for weeks 5 and 6.
English:
This week we are reviewing the 'eer' as
in cheer, 'ear' as in ear, 'air' as in hair and 'are' as in beware. These fortnights
tricky words are: through, every, only, surprise and revision of build &
tomorrow.
Since the beginning of term, we have been focusing
on what a persuasive text is. We learnt that the purpose of a persuasive text
is to convince the reader of an opinion. We have explored the text, 'The True
Story of the Three Little Pigs', to help us understand how important words are when
trying to convince the reader of a particular opinion. We have been using the
mentor text below to better understand the structure of a persuasive text and
that we need to have evidence to support an opinion.
We have continued to learn all about visualising and have now begun the comprehension strategy of Asking Questions. We have learnt that we can ask questions before, during and after reading a text to help us further understand the text and develop our knowledge.
Maths
Last week, we began learning about the
concept of Division and how when completing division, we need to share the
total amount equally. We have learnt that a division sum can be represented by
equal groups, an array, repeated subtraction, skip counting and using the
division symbol. Below is a Youtube clip that may be of interest.

WHAT IS SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE?
This is a fantastic one to discuss this
week as it is such a key skill...being aware of others and being mindful of our
own behaviour goes a long way.
In class we talk a lot about time and
place...knowing the right moment to crack that joke!
When a person knows what makes other
people tick, he or she is displaying social intelligence.
They’re aware of the motives and
feelings of themselves and others, and how to fit into different social
situations.
They can feel comfortable and say the
right thing whether they’re in the boardroom or the janitorial room, in a
school setting or at a construction site. Social intelligence involves two
general components:
- Social awareness: what we sense about others
- Social facility: what we do with our awareness
